ClimbAtlas ("we", "our", "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we handle it.
Who is responsible for your data
ClimbAtlas is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. For privacy questions or requests about your data, contact contact@climbatlas.app.
What we collect
- Account data: When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile photo. This is used solely for authentication, account creation, and displaying your profile.
- Visit and review data: Locations you mark as visited and reviews you write are stored on our servers and linked to your account.
- Location data: If you grant permission, the app accesses your device's GPS position to show nearby bouldering spots and calculate driving distances. Your live location is used only to provide these features and is not stored on our servers.
- Analytics: We use a self-hosted Plausible Analytics instance. Plausible is privacy-focused and does not use cookies for analytics. We collect anonymous page views and events only.
What we do not collect
- We do not use cookies or tracking pixels for analytics.
- We do not sell, share, or transfer your personal data to third parties for advertising or profiling.
- We do not store your GPS location on our servers.
- We do not collect personal data from users who do not sign in, beyond anonymous analytics.
Third-party services
- Google Sign-In: Used for authentication. Processing by Google is governed by Google's own privacy terms.
- Google Places API: Used to fetch photos, opening hours, and reviews for bouldering locations. Requests are proxied through our server so Google Places does not receive your ClimbAtlas account identity from those requests.
- OpenFreeMap: Provides map tiles. We do not intentionally send personal data to this service.
- OSRM: Used for driving distance calculations. Coordinates are sent to calculate routes and distances. We do not intentionally send account identity data with those requests.
Why we process data
- to let you sign in and keep your account secure;
- to save your visits, reviews, and profile data;
- to show nearby locations and calculate distances when you enable location access;
- to understand app usage through anonymous analytics and improve the product.
Data storage and retention
Your account data, visits, and reviews are stored on servers hosted in Europe. We retain this data for as long as your account exists, unless a longer retention period is legally required. The mobile app may cache location data, photos, and preferences locally on your device.
Your rights
Depending on applicable law, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or request portability of your personal data.
- You can delete your local cache at any time from the About screen in the app.
- You can request deletion of your account and all associated data by emailing contact@climbatlas.app.
- You can sign out at any time, which stops further syncing from that device.
We aim to respond to privacy requests without undue delay and, where required by law, within one month.
Children
ClimbAtlas is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
